The too-flimsy wrapper is a little rubbed on the edges and slightly sunned on the spine; it was protected by a plastic covering which has left tape stains on the endpapers. Ryan brings the story of the contemporary Aboriginal community right up to date and makes her contribution to the sometimes bitter historiographical debates of recent years. The sub-title notwithstanding, the first chapter provides a detailed portrait of Aboriginal society prior to 1803.
