Leichhardt's Expeditioners
In the Australian Wilderness 1844-1845
by Dan Sprod

On 17 December 1845 the garrison of Victoria Settlement, Port Essington, (now in the Northern Territory), were astonished by the arrival on horseback of the German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and his party. The expedition had travelled from the Darling Downs, Queensland to the remote outpost, traversing some 3000 miles in fourteen and a half months, The party had been so long in the field, that it was considered to be lost.
Leichhardt kept a field journal which was published in edited form in London, 1847. What is less well known is that two of his party – the convict William Phillips and the young lad John Murphy – also kept journals and these are here published in full for the first time. The texts are accompanied by historical commentaries which provide background on the authors and information on the reliability of their journals as original source documents. The book also concentrates on personal relationships and the contribution of individual expeditioners towards the success of the venture. Leichhardt’s reactions to each of his men are examined and a judgment is made on the appropriateness of the controversial German as leader during this extraordinarily difficult, yet ultimately successful journey.
