Reading in Colonial Tasmania
the early years of the Evandale Subscription Library
by KEITH ADKINS

The Evandale Subscription Library was founded in 1847 by the Presbyterian Reverend Robert Russell.
It was a practical expression of his faith and of the ideals of the Scottish Enlightenment,
promoting the ideals of education, science, civic-mindedness and sobriety. The Library's
manuscript catalogue of books and loans has survived, enabling the author
to examine not only what books and periodicals were held in the collection
but who it was that donated and/or borrowed them.
