This major study deals with the life of the Danish adventurer Jorgen Jorgenson - known to students of Tasmanian history as the 'Convict King' or the 'Viking of Van Diemen's Land', and to those of Icelandic history as the self-styled 'Protector of Iceland' during a short-lived overthrow of the Danish governor's authority in 1809.
The work includes the first publication of Jorgenson's own account of the 1809 'revolution', and that of Count Trampe, the deposed governor, together with original documents from Icelandic, Danish and British institutions, many never previously published. The book traverses all of Jorgenson's life, including his contribution to the exploration and settlement of Australia (1800-05), his activities in England and Europe (1806-25) and his final years in Van Diemen's Land (1826-41), and is supported by notes, references and an extensive bibliography.
