25 Achilles Tatius: translated by William Burton. Edited by Stephen Gaselee and H.F.B. Brett-Smith. The Loves of Clitophon and Leucippe / The Most Delectable and Plesant Historye of Clitophon and Leucippe.
Oxford Basil Blackwell / Shakespeare Head Press 1923
Translated from the Greek... Reprinted for the first time from a copy now unique printed by Thomas Creede in 1597. Number 287 of 394 copies printed on Batchelor's Kelmscott hand-made paper for sale in Great Britain and 104 copies for sale in America. Edited by Stephen Gaselee and H.F.B. Brett-Smith. Tall 4to. xxxii, [viii], 152, [6]pp. Quarter cloth and papered boards, title label laid onto the upper, paper spine label (missing a few small pieces); extremities rubbed, two stains at foot of the upper board and one at the foot of the lower. The uncut edges a little spotted, pages xxiv & xxv heavily foxed, as are the fore-margins and top corners of the preceding leaves (not extending to the text); otherwise clean throughout and in good to very good condition. Loosely inserted is a prospectus for the same publisher's forthcoming limited edition of Ovid's Metamorphosis, Books X-XV. ***The first English translation of one of the few surviving Greek romantic works in prose. An appendix records that a further copy of the 1597 edition came to light as this volume was being bound, and was acquired by Mr Gaselee. Like the copy already in his possession, it was incomplete, but it did have two of the three leaves missing from the former: A2 (title page, verso blank) and U4 (the final text pages); the third (AI) was almost certainly blank. While the missing text had been supplied in this volume from another translation, the appendix reproduces a type facsimile of the title page and a reproduction of the missing text from U4, following the same principles of translation as used in the body of the book.
