Facsimile of the first edition of 1755. In two volumes: A-K & L-Z. Folio, [1160]pp each volume, two-colour titles, printed on laid acid-free paper. Full maroon faux leather, foil-blocked on old gold and dark green, silk head and tail-bands, edges sprinkled. In the publisher's slipcase, and with the inserted booklet containing 'The Genesis of Johnson's Dictionary' by Dr J.D. Freeman & 'The Lexicographic Achievement of Johnson' by Dr Brian O'Kill - but lacking the facsimile of Johnson's 'The Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language'. ***PLEASE NOTE: a previous owner has marked with a highlighter pen some words (words only, not their definitions) - on perhaps 20% of the pages, usually one only on the page, but sometimes two or three. Otherwise clean and in very good condition internally: the binding very good (corners a trifle rubbed); the slipcase a little rubbed on the extremities.
