Original cloth with dustwrapper (extremities rubbed and a few small chips from the edges, now in protective sleeve). Very good. ***From New Bedford to the South Seas. 'Morgan' and the author's ms now at Mystic, Conn. The illustrations - pen-and-ink drawings showing various aspects of the whaling life, from harpooning to cutting-in the whale - are from a journal kept by an unknown crew-member of the whaler 'Clara Bell' out of New bedford in the 1850s, and had not previously been published.

ISBN 097513311X ***Copping worked in the bay whaling and fishing industries before going off-shore whaling at the age of 18. He commanded several Tasmanian whaling vessels and ending his sea-going career as master of the 'Harriet McGregor' and 'Lufra', two of Hobart's finest sailing ships. Copping's memoirs have not before been published: his story also includes encounters with cannibals, Maori wars on the Chatham Islands, and the Otago gold-rush.
