4 BOILEAU, [Jacques] & J.L. Delome. The History of the Flagellants, or The Advantages of Discipline; being a paraphrase and commentary on the Historia Flagellantium of the Abbe Boileau, Doctor of the Sorbonne, Canon of the Holy Chapel &c. By Somebody who is not Doctor of the Sorbonne.
London Fielding and Walker 1777
First edition. 4to. [iv], 1-3, 2-7, 6-8, [ii], 10-340pp; 4 engraved plates and 4 vignettes. The text is complete, the erratic early pagination notwithstanding. Full contemporary calf with spine label; rebacked (not recently), retaining the original gilt-decorated spine; extremities rubbed but stabilised by the conservator. The original free endpapers have two tape stains each to their fore-margin from a previous covering; the front paste-down has a bookseller's catalogue entry for the book (not recent) and the small labels of Upham & Beet of New Bond Street and Robertson & Mullens of Melbourne. The front free endpaper has a vertical crease and an owner's small name stamp. The half-title is present but a long vertical tear has been crudely repaired with a large piece of heavy tape applied to the verso, and there are a few small chips to its edges. The final two leaves each have a short clean tear to the fore-margin closed with clear tape (not recently), the plates and leaves with the vignettes (the latter printed on the heavier paper used for the plates) offset a little to facing and/or adjacent pages; some yellowing to the foot margins of most pages otherwise the text clean. A good to very good copy. *** Boileau's work was 'an aggregation of facts and quotations on the subject of self-disciplines and flagellations in general among Christians, and a mixture of alternate commendation, and blame, of that practice' (Preface).
