Digby (1603–65) was an English courtier, diplomat, one-time privateer, natural philosopher and leading Roman Catholic intellectual. He described the courting of his wife Venetia Stanley in his Private Memoirs 'under feigned names'. Venetia died suddenly in 1633, leaving Digby grief-stricken.
