Social Credit., DOUGLAS, Major C.H.
14 DOUGLAS, Major C.H. Social Credit.
London Cecil Palmer 1924
First edition. viii, 223pp. Original red cloth, title blocked in black on upper board, blind rules; the spine a trifle sunned, the extremities a trifle rubbed, an owner's name on the front. Edges age-yellowed, the same owner's name on front pastedown. A very good clean copy. ***A classic of unorthodox economic/political theory. Major Douglas sought to describe a system which would disperse economic and political power to individuals, with a cash stipend called the National Dividend, representing an individual's fair share in the bounty of the nation’s economy and resources, distributed to all citizens. Although his ideas were both hazy and complicated - and firmly rejected by mainstream economists - they did gather some support, mostly in British Commonwealth countries. The Canadian state of Alberta elected a Social Credit Party to government, and the New Zealand Social Credit Party was the country's third political force for some 30 years; even in far-flung Tasmania a Social Credit member held the balance of power for a time in the state legislature. Many if not most of these groups were influenced by the theory rather than following strictly Douglas' precepts. The movement all but died away in the post-war world, although it is not without current admirers.
