16 VERNON, Samuel. North Book : the journal of an eighteenth century traveller.
Hobart The Editor 2002
Transcribed and edited by Frances Kay. 4to. 51pp, map. Illustrated wrappers with hard plastic backstrip. New. ***Vernon owned an estate in Occleston, Cheshire. In April 1766, at 26 years of age, he set off on a two-month tour of northern France and the Low Countries with his friend Edward Bridge. They landed at Calais, went south as far as Paris before turning northwards and travelling throughout Belgium and the Netherlands (and across the border to Aachen). This style of tour, popular (on a grander scale) amongst the aristocracy, was at this time not undertaken often by those of Vernon's social class. He took a keen interest in all he saw and paid particular attention to military matters (not perhaps surprising given the recent Seven Years War). The journal is here transcribed in full, with annotations. Its title suggests to the editor that there may well have been a 'South Book' as well, from another tour, perhaps towards the Mediterreanean.
