Price: $385.00

Quantity: 1 available

Issued by the Government of Tasmania. Second edition. With two hundred and sixty-five illustrations and three folding maps. xx, 500pp, 3 folding maps, 2 full-page plans (of Hobart and Launceston), 3 maps of fishing sites, coloured plate (trout flies, at p320); and with the loosely inserted Addenda to Section V, Orcharding...(16pp, including plain titled wrappers). Papered boards cut flush, gilt titles and coloured vignette inlaid on the upper. The gilt title and 'synopsis' (list of sections) on the upper board are dulled in places (the small type used for the synopsis must always have been hard to read); the spine sunned and chipped at head and tail. There is a 3cm split at the head of the upper joint/hinge, otherwise the binding still solid; now with a new mylar wrapper. The text clean and the maps in excellent condition. ***This copy belonged to E.T. Emmett, with his inscriptions at the top corner of front cover and the front endpaper. Evelyn Temple Emmett (1871-1970) was the first Director of the Tasmanian Government Tourist Bureau (after it was separated from the railways in 1934), a famed bushwalker and the author numerous articles and books of which the best known is 'Tasmania by Road and Track' (Melbourne, 1952). ***The first edition was 1908: this is revised and expanded. A one-volume issue of what was also issued in five parts; that is, the five separate sections: [I] Information for immigrants and statistics (pp1–84). [II] Australia's playground and health resort (pp86–260, with general map). [III] Crown Land Laws & Timber Industry (pp261–304, with map of timber areas). [IV] An Angler's Guide: sport with rod and line (pp305–420, coloured plate of trout flies, 3 sketch maps). [V] Orcharding, Dairy, Poultry & General Farming (pp421–500, last blank, map of agriculture/land use; inserted 16pp addenda). Because this book was compiled from (or, also issued in) separate parts, they are often found without the full complement of maps, and occasionally with misbindings of some sections. The loosely inserted addenda to the final section is uncommon.
