First edition. Ferguson 3762. vi,[7]-356pp; frontis portrait and folding map. Original quarter leather and dun boards, worn and bumped, the lower joint rather fragile, spine lettering mostly worn away. Now in mylar jacket. 'Meadville Theological School' book plate on front paste-down, with other markings indicating ownership, small hole in ffep, perforated stamp of the school's library at foot of title-page, otherwise internally clean and crisp. ***Author's presentation copy. Inscribed in pencil at top of title-page: 'Dr. J. Dodge, From Mrs. Wait, Ithaca, Nov. 28 - 1844'. Wait, a US citizen, was a leader of the Canadian Patriotic Rebellion of 1837. His death sentence was commuted to transportion to Van Diemen's Land. He escaped in 1841, returning to his wife, then resident in Niagara Falls. Mrs Wait had been untiring in her efforts to gain her husband's release, but she died shortly after they were reunited.
