English Version by Philip Walsh. First edition in English. 4to. viii, 316, folding photographic frontis with tissue guard & 41 plates (48 b&w photographs, 3 sketches, one map). Original blue-grey cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt and with a penguin blocked in white, title and gold-blocked ship illustration on the upper board. Extremities a little rubbed, some splash marks on spine and lower board, the white from the spine penguin somewhat abraded. Rough opening of pages in three places has left small pieces missing from the fore-margin or a short closed clean tear (pp141-4, 189-92, 283-4). A slight damp mark of the top edges is evident, very slightly, in the head margin of a few leaves. Otherwise a good to very good clean copy. ISBN 0708111459 ***Spence 262, Renard 296, Rosove 67.A1. The 'Pourquoi Pas?' was later lost in the Arctic when her boilers blew up; all but one of the crew, including Charcot, were killed.
