François Péron was a zoologist on Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia and the Pacific 1801-03. He wrote the first part of an historical account of the voyage (before his premature death in 1810), in which he sought to destroy his commander's reputation. His account contained a great deal of anthropological material concerning the Tasmanian Aborigines, and the zoological specimens he gathered formed part of the most comprehensive contemporary collection of Australian natural history.
