Vol II: x, 388 (last blank)pp; coloured frontis, 12 plates, folding map. Deep blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the spines and upper boards, coloured illustration laid into the upper board of both volumes; top edges gilt, the others uncut. The bindings are in very good clean condition. The first and last several leaves of both volumes are quite heavily foxed, and an occasional page in the text likewise, but generally clean. An inscription has been neatly erased from both front paste-down endpapers (barely noticeable). The foxing aside, a very good set.
1st edition (Volume II is a 2nd impression). xx, 556; xii, 508pp. Photogravure frontis in each volume, colour plates from Edward Wilson's watercolours, b&w photographs and illus, line illus, maps (those in rear pockets neatly repaired, in Vol II a couple of very small splits at folds). Original cloth with gilt medallion illus on top boards (gilt rubbed, spines lightly sunned, extremities rubbed with minor wear at head and tail of spine). Some spotting, mostly early and late and on edges. Small bookplate and neat owner's name on ffeps. Very good. ***Spence 1053. Renard 1376 (without adverts): 'Printed from the same type as the 1905 Colonial edition, but on larger and better quality paper, textually complete and with a few more illustrations'. Rosove 286.B3.
