Folio. [iv], 16, , 20 lithographed plates (each with multiple images; 16 with a page of text facing and 4 following one page of text; the rectos of the text leaves are blank). Original brown cloth, blind rules, lettered in gilt on the upper board; the cloth unevenly faded, extremities slightly rubbed, a little more so at head and tail of spine, a few trifling marks. The endpapers splitting at the gutter but the binding solid. Some foxing on the last four plates and the title & half-title; some the other plates have a little of this in the margins, otherwise clean. Owner's name on front paste-down. A good to very good copy. ***Samuel Prout (1783-1852) was one of the masters of British architectural watercolour painting. He was "a prominent author of ‘teach yourself’ watercolour painting books... Later art manuals such as Hints on Light and Shadow, Composition etc. (1836) and Prout's Microcosm: the Artist's Sketchbook (1841) were illustrated in the new technique of lithography, of which Prout was a pioneer" [DNB].
