First edition. 414pp. Original cloth with the dustwrapper featuring a Beattie photograph of Lake St Clair. The front lower corner slightly bumped, the wrapper a trifle chipped at the extremities, otherwise a very good clean copy. With the publisher's small 4pp booklet 'Opinions of the Press on Strabane of the Mulberry Hills' [all positive you will be surprised to hear]. *** The story concerns the disappearance of the wife of Heylin Tamlash, the owner of the Tasmanian estate 'Strabane...', which is cleared up with the help of the bushranger Martin Cash; the malicious oddity of two vaguely arty nieces who are Talmash's heirs; and the events that follow his alternative adoption of a boy, Newton Callimont. The author (1875-1945) was a South Australian who had an interest in the convict history of Tasmania, and visited often.
