First edition. Two volumes. [I] xlviii, 372pp, frontis portrait, 6 full-page coloured plates with titled tissues, 97 plates with 122 b&w illustrations (77 full-page) 2 double-page panoramas and one double-page spread with photographs of 16 expedition members. [II] xvi, 420pp, frontis, 6 full-page coloured plates with titled tissues, 93 plates with 141 b&w illustrations (51 full-page), 1 double-page plate, 3 folding maps and one tissue sheet with two panoramas in rear pocket. The errata slip is not present. Original blue cloth, silver-blocked illustrations on the upper boards, spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut. The spines are heavily faded and there is a 15mm split in cloth at head of the spine of the second volume; the upper board of the first volume has a small round stain at foot and another at the top left corner of the decorative panel. Internally in very good to fine condition: the text pages, plates, and the folding maps and panoramas are all clean and crisp. ***Spence 1097, Renard 1446 (but without wrappers), Rosove 305 B1.
