First UK edition. xviii, 512pp, 4 folding coloured maps, frontis and 14 other b&w plates, text illustrations. Modern rebinding, retaining the half-title, in half brown leather and patterned cloth, raised bands and gilt rules, new endpapers. The title-page, and most of the plates, have a faint blind stamp in the top corner (possibly Royal Australian Institute); that on the title has within it the hand-written date 1/9/75 [1875 presumably]. The plate facing p316 has a small piece snipped from its lower corner. The title-page slightly soiled, otherwise a very good clean copy. ***PIke was the US consul at Port Louis. His account includes much on the fauna and flora of the island.
